4 Feb 2012 5pm Call for Submissions artists based anywhere

time capsule, group show, 23 Feb–9 Sept 2012
opening, 6–9pm 22 Feb 2012

What does it mean to be human? What would you submit as a symbol of humanity? How would you represent humankind to extraterrestrials?
Artists are invited to imagine smartloft as a time capsule being rocketed into outer space. Work will be installed in the rooms with the notion that extraterrestrials could reside in our spaces and experience life from a human perspective.

At this moment in human history, four time capsules have been launched into space— two Pioneer Plaques and the two Voyager Golden Records. In 2014 the KEO satellite will be sent into space with individual messages from earthlings to be read by future earthlings when the satellite returns to earth in the year 52,000. Our time capsule will be presented as a significant collection of objects, ideas, and documents from artists and other creative people. How would you communicate with aliens and/or people of the future? What single object do you think is the most important to share as part of this kind of project?

Submission Format:
Artists should submit work/object/document/idea that activates the concept of a space time capsule, or alternatively, submit a proposal for a new project that investigates the theme.

Artist CV/resume and artist statement, including full contact information, including address, day/evening phone numbers, email address, and website.
All mediums will be considered including but not limited to: drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, performance, and video.

Call for Submissions
Building Dwelling Thinking-Bauen Wohnen Denken
Group Exhibition in Berlin at smartloft apt&art
www.smartloft.de
opening: 6-9pm Thursday, 15 September 2011
show duration: 15 Sept 2011 -1 Feb 2012

The essay „Building Dwelling Thinking-Bauen Wohnen Denken“ written in 1951 by the German philosopher Martin Heidegger, will be the springboard from which our next exhibition will be developed, considered, and framed. The exhibition works need not have a direct or obvious reference to this essay, rather we want to provide the artists with a timeless text in which to inspire and engage their works within our living spaces.

Art challenges us to think. An artist´s opinions, reactions, and his or her world is uniquely expressed in artworks, often with relevance to society and politics. smartloft apartments&art believes that bringing art from the gallery into a private space allows a more intimate conversation between the work and the observer. Living with an artwork generates a different type of contemplation and introspection than the experience permitted at a gallery or museum. Not only are we intent in providing a resonant experience to our guests, but we are also interested in presenting artists the opportunity to show in our carefully designed apartments, and/or to create site specific work which then only belongs to this particular space and time.
Furthermore, Berlin boast more than 6000 artists many of whom are international. We would like to ask artists to consider the theme of Building Dwelling Thinking-Bauen Wohnen Denken in Berlin and one’s relationship the space in which is changing through building, dwellling and thinking.
